Five Years Later.

Well I wrote a song a few years ago
About the time that I heard the news
And I know I’ve no right to inflict my views on you
But it seems we’re ignoring advice again
From the people whose lives were spent
Defending our freedoms and keeping the wolves from our doors
And if I didn’t know what greed was then well I’m sure that I do now
Because ‘Where We Came From’ just doesn’t seem like enough anymore
When practising apathy gave them the opportunity to grab the bull by the horns
And the last of the protest song heroes are all but dead and gone
And those that remain well they lurk in the shadows where they used to bask in the sun
And I always thought that to protest was to ask for a better world
But these days it seems like it’s joining a long list of new-found dirty words
Well I’ve covered a few miles between then and now
All the time I’ve been asking about
When people are gonna start looking out for each other
A million sisters and two million brothers
‘Cos families have fought and died you know
For the values we hold so close
Values that under the cover of darkness
Are being pulled out from under our noses
And if I didn’t know what greed was then well I sure am learning fast
Because ‘Where We Came From’ just doesn’t seem like enough anymore
When practising apathy gave them the opportunity to grab the bull by the horns
And the last of the protest song heroes are all but dead and gone
And those that remain well they lurk in the shadows where they used to bask in the sun
And I always thought that welfare was just another word for ‘happiness’
But these days the definition’s been shifted and now it means something else
Well these people are bought and paid for
And I know that every man has his price
But it seems like they think that theirs is a lot higher than yours and mine
And selling yourself is one thing and I’ll fight for your right for a choice
But you’re selling the futures of everyone without even giving them a voice
And what’s worse is that you’re turning us against each other just to distract us from it all
Because ‘Where We Came From’ just doesn’t seem like enough anymore
When practising apathy gave them the opportunity to grab the bull by the horns
And the last of the protest song heroes are all but dead and gone
And those that remain well they lurk in the shadows where they used to bask in the sun
And I only wish that more people could see what they’re doing to you and me
It’s not fair, it’s not right, it’s not big, it’s not clever
And the only way we can stop them is if we all stand together
Because ‘Where We Came From’ just doesn’t seem like enough anymore
So I wrote myself a brand new song just to remind people exactly what I stand for
And I invite you all to stand with me now on the edge of a brave new world
‘Cos if we all stand and shout together as one then there’s no way we can’t be heard
And the first thing we’ll do is we’ll change the definition
The most corrupt word in our language is ‘politician’
And we’ll expose them for what they really are
And then get to work on healing the scars
