There Is Another Way

 

In a perfect world this would be high up on the list

Of things that used to be wrong but we were brave enough to fix

'Cos learning from your mistakes is the fastest way to grow

And admitting that you need change is the first step on the road

A system that puts too much emphasis on greed

is never going to change without a push from you and me

'Cos they'll never let us vote for it so we'll show them with our feet

They can take away your freedom but they can't take away your dreams

And I still believe, in a fairer society

One without a cage around a definition of being free

And I want to be free not to consume but to create

And build communities around love instead of hate

And a system that would choose to share instead of take

There is another way

In a sane world we wouldn't be counting down the years

Until we're past the point of no return and realising our fears

Because ignoring a problem won't make it go away

Especially in a system so resistant to change

We know we need to stop consuming more than we put back

But dependence on growth will never let us off the track

When the Earth below is empty and the sky above's on fire

And all we've got to show is magic numbers getting higher

And I still believe, in a fairer society

One where we're not hell-bent on burning our ecology

And I want a world left for my children to explore

One where we dream of enough instead of more

Where we listen to their voices and act on what they say

There is another way

And you might say that these things aren't too closely linked

But capitalism and climate change are closer than you think

If we carry on consuming in the end we'll eat it all

If you dig down deep enough the only thing to do is fall

Growing our economy doesn't make society more fair

But burning finite resources pollutes everybodys air

Prosperity and happiness don't go hand in hand

When money travels up then misery travels down

And I still believe, in a fairer society

One where we all take some responsibility

Where I change and you change but systems change the most

And we realise that where we are isn't where we need to go

And we do everything within our power to see a brand new day
